Last week I moved to adorable Newport, Kentucky. Located right on the Ohio River, Newport is home to a great community, lots of festivals, and is a short drive or walk to downtown Cincinnati. As with any move there were tons of items I found I needed when putting all of my old furniture in my new place; I found so many great items that I needed at Target.
We spent just about all of last week moving (hence my lack of activity on the blog) from the old apartment several miles south of Newport to the historic district of the city. With my crazy work schedule and a pup, it took just about all week to gather up all of our items and get settled in our new place. As of today, we are almost all of the way moved. Shew.
While moving we realized we had a hodge-podge of furniture and decorations from college... nothing really matched or felt like home. I knew moving into this new place would be somewhat of a turning point. I wanted it to feel like home, a place I looked forward to hanging out in, not like a college house or bachelorette pad. I wanted cozy furniture, plenty of storage, and that good central Kentucky down-home feel.
The place we moved to is old. Like built in 1902 old. It has 10 foot ceilings, original hardwood floors, extremely tall original windows, and so much personality. With its personality came some quirky aspects like out-of-order chimneys that were closed up with bricks and old chipping but original tile that we had to incorporate into the house as art or focal points. But all of the house's character just makes it feel more like home.
While I'm all about my new place feeling like home, I definitely didn't want to break the bank. I found the happy medium of home supplies at Target. Functional and cute pieces are key and I was able to find all of them at bargain prices! By mixing in some of my current pieces with the new items, I was able to create a space that I loved and can't wait to spend more time in. It's definitely still a work in progress - there's so much left to do, like buying panel curtains, updating some current pieces (hint hint, the polar bear table is being painted gold!), and little decor tidbits - but for now, it feels like home.
