Having grown up in Central Kentucky, bourbon has always been a staple in my life. I'm by no means an avid bourbon drinker, but visiting distilleries, learning about their history, and experiencing their processes is something so distinctly Kentuckian that it's just in my blood.
I've been to several stops along the famed Bourbon Trail located in various towns in Central Kentucky - in other words, the Bourbon Trail is in my hometown's backyard. Although I've been to several distilleries, one will always have a special place in my heart: Maker's Mark. Whether it's because of its beautiful, hidden location, historical ties, or signature red wax-dipped bottles, it tends to steal the affection of everyone who visits.
Maker's Mark distillery is located in rural Loretto, Kentucky, about fifteen minutes from my hometown. Black warehouses, a print shop, stillhouse, tasting rooms, and bottling rooms are scattered across a green pasture, made picturesque by the red shutters lining the windows and trees lining the paths. If you look closely, you can see carved bourbon bottle outlines clad on the shutters. A trail connects the buildings allowing visitors to easily tour the grounds and see each of the buildings, tying together the distilling & bottling processes.
My favorite time of year to visit Maker's Mark is Christmastime. They have open houses throughout the holidays to celebrate and provide tours, tastings of bourbon hot chocolate & eggnog, and holiday music for tourists to enjoy. You can even dip your own bottle in their classic wax seal (for a fee). If I have time during the holidays, I try to make a trip to Maker's simply because of its cheery atmosphere. It'll definitely get you in the holiday spirit. :)
If you can't make it during the holiday season, don't fret! They're open most days for guided tours and bottle-dipping. Their gift shop is always stocked with uinque goodies and bourbon, of course. Learn more about Maker's Mark or plan your trip to the distillery by visiting their website here. You won't regret it!
